The Knees: Where We Store the Weight of Emotion, Movement, and Change

The knees are one of the most sensitive and powerful joints in the human body, not just physically, but emotionally and energetically too.
We often think of knee pain as a structural issue, caused by wear and tear or overuse. And while that’s true to a degree, there’s another layer: unprocessed emotion and energetic stagnation that often goes unnoticed.
In my work as a massage therapist and energy healer, the knees speak volumes.

Common Knee Injuries – The Physical Side
Before diving into the emotional and energetic layers, let’s look at some of the most common knee injuries:
Torn ligaments (ACL, MCL) – often caused by sudden change of direction or trauma
Patellar tendinitis – inflammation from repetitive use or strain
Meniscus tears – often from twisting movements or pressure
Bursitis – swelling from overuse or kneeling
Arthritis – chronic inflammation, stiffness, and joint pain over time
These injuries often come from instability, imbalance, or tension — but in my experience, they’re also linked to deeper emotional themes.
What Emotions Are Stored in the Knees?
The knees are deeply connected to movement, direction, humility, and surrender. They're the part of the body that bends, softens, carries, and supports — making them incredibly symbolic.
Here are some of the emotional patterns I’ve noticed stored in the knees:
Fear of moving forward – feeling stuck in life, career, or relationships
Resistance to change – clinging to what feels safe, even when it no longer serves
Unresolved grief or sadness – especially when someone feels unsupported
Pride or control issues – difficulty asking for help, or fear of vulnerability
Carrying others’ burdens – overgiving or holding responsibility that isn’t yours
You may notice that clients with recurring knee issues are often the ones who are always “holding it all together” for others, or those who find it hard to trust the flow of life.
The Energy of the Knees
Energetically, the knees are influenced by both the Root Chakra (safety, support, grounding) and the Sacral Chakra (movement, emotion, fluidity). When there’s an imbalance in either of these energy centres, it can manifest as knee pain, stiffness, or even injury.

Symbolically:
Right knee = action, masculine energy, moving forward
Left knee = receptivity, feminine energy, trust and surrender
If someone is struggling to take a step forward in life or resisting their soul’s path, the knees often “lock up” in response.
How I Work with Knee Energy Through Massage + Healing
When a client presents with knee issues — even if they’re not aware of the emotional aspect — I approach it holistically:
1. Grounding Touch
First, I begin with grounding techniques — placing my hands gently around the feet, ankles, and legs to anchor the energy body. This helps calm the nervous system and connect the client back to the earth, back to safety.
2. Gentle Massage + Fascia Release
Using slow, deliberate strokes around the thighs, calves, and into the knee joint, I work to release fascial tension and restore circulation. I pay attention to holding patterns — areas that feel stuck or “buzzing” — and hold space there.
Apricot kernel oil or castor oil are my favourites here — both deeply nourishing and energetically supportive.
3. Emotional Inquiry
I may gently ask questions like:
“Is there anywhere in life you’re resisting movement?”
“What would it feel like to soften around this?”This isn’t therapy, but a gentle opening of space for the body to speak.
4. Energy Clearing
Using Energy, The Alyran Code™, and hands-on energy work, I scan the knee area and allow any stored emotion to surface. Sometimes it’s warmth, tingling, tears, or even laughter — whatever is ready to release, I let it flow.
I visualise golden-white light washing through the joint, releasing fear, pain, or burden, and reactivating ease, trust, and fluidity.
5. Rebalancing and Integration
Finally, I invite the energy to settle by integrating grounding strokes and a light touch over the sacral and root chakras. I often guide the client into breath or visualisation here to help them reclaim their sense of movement and support.
A Closing Reflection
Your knees are not just bones and ligaments. They are symbolic messengers of your path, your direction, your willingness to soften — or your resistance to surrender.
If you find yourself with recurring knee pain or stiffness, ask gently:
What am I resisting? Where am I afraid to move forward? What would happen if I softened, just a little?
In every healing session, there is an invitation to return — not just to movement, but to trust.

Testimonial
“I went to Alyra with knee pain that I thought was purely physical — but within minutes of her working, I felt emotional waves releasing. She helped me understand how much I’d been carrying, and where I’d been resisting change in my life. The session was incredibly healing, not just for my knees, but for my soul.
